Ice Breakers - The Name Game

This ice breaker gives you two for the price of one. Using their name tags or tent cards, make sure all participants’ first and last names are legible and spelled correctly. Tell the group you are going to see how many people’s names they can remember. This will illicit some groans because remembering names is one of the most common problem areas people express.

Divide the group in half – Group A and Group B. Tell the B group that they are going to be studied by the A group for just a few minutes. Make sure they prominently display their name tags or tent cards.

Tell the Group A to move closer to Group B, and study their names and faces. Give them only one or two minutes, depending on the size of the group. When they are finished, reverse the groups.

When the second group is finished, have Group A get out a piece of paper, and tell Group B to hide their names. In RANDOM order, have each individual from Group B stand up as you say, “This is #1; this is #2,” etc. Group A should write the name of the person in the order in which you called them. When they are finished, reverse the procedure so Group B writes names. Reveal the correct names, and recognize the class members with the best recollection.

If you like, you can make spelling count! In addition to being an energizing ice breaker, participants will retain names throughout the course regardless of their group.
