Ice Breaker - I'm Going on a Picnic

This is a version of a child’s game that works perfectly for an ice breaker. First write the “solution” to the game on small pieces of paper, and fold them. Distribute the papers to all the class members with this admonition, “We’re going to play a little game. The answer to the game is on the paper I am distributing. First I want you to guess how the game is played. At any time, however, you can look at the “solution,” and when you do, you can still continue playing!”

The game is very simple, and it works particularly well when the group has name badges or they know each other’s names. Each person in the room is going on a picnic, and they are each taking two items. Each of those items begins with the first letter of their first and last names. For example, Sarah Jamison would say, “I’m going on a picnic, and I’m taking a softball and a jersey.” Barbara Parks would say, “I’m going on a picnic and I’m taking a banana and a pickle.”

To start, point to someone, and have the participant try to figure it out. Undoubtedly, that person will name two things that don’t match his or her name. You simply say, “No, you can’t go,” and point to another person. You can either “plant” a few people who know how to play the game, or wait until someone catches on or reads the solution.

Inevitably, a few people opt rather quickly to read the solution, while others are determined to catch on. It’s a fun way to break the ice and remember each other’s names.
