Ice Breakers - Take Two—They’re Small

Create a sheet of questions, and cut them so that each participant has a grouping of the same questions. Five or 10 individual questions are adequate.

Example questions may include:

  • What is your most special talent?
  • What is your favorite hobby?
  • Describe your favorite relative.
  • What do you dislike most about the weather?
  • Describe your ideal vacation.
  • If you could have dinner with anyone on Earth, who would it be?

You can add a variety of other questions, including ones specific to your institution or geography. For example:

  • Describe your most difficult challenge.
  • Describe the one thing you look forward to each day.
  • What is the most difficult task or project to which you’ve been assigned?

At the start of a training class or meeting, take a group of people and distribute a stack of questions to each. Tell the participants they have five minutes to approach someone, introduce themselves, have one or more people select a question, and answer it. Then that person can reciprocate.

Reconvene the group at the end of an appropriate amount of time. Go through each question, surveying who received an answer. Depending on the amount of interaction you want to create, you could have them tell the name of the person, and a little bit about how they responded. Some will probably be very interesting. Facilitate the activity, and keep the activity moving. It’s an excellent way to get people acquainted and comfortable with one another.
